Car slams into dump truck, sparks fire on I-95 NB between SR 16 and International Golf Parkway

A driver was critically injured Tuesday night when his car slammed into the back of a dump truck, became trapped underneath it and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported just before midnight on I-95 northbound between State Road 16 and International Golf Parkway.

The 27-year-old man from Cincinnati who was driving the car had to be airlifted to a local trauma center in critical condition, St. Johns County Fire Rescue said.

According to FHP, the car and the dump truck were both headed north in the center lane when the speeding car hit the back of the dump truck and became lodged underneath.

The dump truck dragged the car until they both stopped.

The 33-year-old man driving the dump truck was not hurt. Both men were wearing seat belts, according to the report.
