Hot Hot Hot!: Highs on Sunday could break a record set the same year Ulysses S. Grant was re-elected President

Triple digit heat index expected, as well

Heat Index Tips

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As temperatures continue to soar, records are close to melting away.

In Northeast Florida this weekend, the record high in Jacksonville for June 8 is 99 degrees, set in 1993. News4JAX is forecasting a high on Saturday of 98 degrees. Sunday is expected to be even warmer, perhaps the hottest day of 2024 so far with a forecast high of 99 degrees. The record for June 9 is 101 set in 1872, 152 years ago!

In 1872, Ulysses S. Grant was re-elected as President of the United States, suffragist Susan B. Anthony voted for the first time, defying the law that women couldn’t vote and Yellowstone was established as America’s first national park.

For folks in our region who are susceptible to heat-related illnesses due to high heat and thus, high heat indexes, precaution’s include staying indoors in the air-conditioning during peak hours, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated (even if you don’t feel thirsty), keep pets indoors, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and wear a hat and sunscreen if outdoors.

The heat will continue into Monday with a forecast high of 100 from the National Weather Service. The record high for June 10 is 100 set in 1954.

This heat wave is hitting us earlier this year compared to 2023 where we had the highest temperature of the year of 102 on Aug. 11.

However, in 2022, Jacksonville recorded 103 on June 23.

Either way, it’s looking like the heat is here to stay.
