JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Volunteers helped place thousands of flags on graves at Jacksonville National Cemetery Thursday.
The cemetery’s support committee invited volunteers from schools, scouts, cadets, churches, government agencies, corporations, civic outreach groups or any local group, along with active-duty military and veterans, to volunteer Thursday to put flags at the gravesites.
There are about 20,000.

The tradition is to have the flags in place ahead of Saturday’s Memorial Day Observance ceremony.
Placing the flags typically draws an overwhelming turnout. Last year, more than 3,000 volunteers showed up to help.
