Florida has 7th best economy in country, Wallet Hub study finds

Florida has the seventh-best economy in the country, according to a new analysis from Wallet Hub.

The Sunshine State’s economy is so large that if it were a country, it would rank in the top 20 in the world.

Other states with strong economies include Washington State, California and Texas.

Florida ranks fourth in economic activity and second in economic health but only ranks 31st for innovation potential. That last category includes things like jobs in high-tech industries, inventor patents per population and entrepreneurial activity, so there is room for improvement.

Washington State, Utah and Massachusetts make up the top three. They each have a strong job market, a booming tech industry and some of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

One of the brightest spots for Florida is related to start-ups. The state saw the most start-up activity -- more than two times as much as the last state on the list, West Virginia.

Looking north of the state line, Georgia is also near the top of Wallet Hub’s list.

The Peach State ranked 14th and actually ranked higher on innovation potential than Florida, but much lower in economic activity and health.
