Though wave heights are measuring slightly lower Monday than Saturday, a high rip current risk remains in effect for Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Coastal St. Johns Beaches on Monday.

A former lifeguard at Jacksonville Beach is telling her story publicly for the first time, alleging a culture of abuse and harassment among lifeguards that was tolerated by the City of Jacksonville Beach.

Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue is reporting a record number of calls-for-service. On Saturday, June 25, lifeguards responded to 56, a record number for June.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Jacksonville Beach saw wind and strong surf as Tropical Storm Isaias moved past on Monday. Despite the high risk of rip currents, choppy water and high surf, people still came out to Jacksonville Beach. All weekend and into Monday, red flags flew Jacksonville’s beaches, warning swimmers of high surf and dangerous rip currents. Outside of dangerous water conditions, Jacksonville Beach remained relatively calm as Tropical Storm Isaias made its way up Florida’s east coast. Jacksonville Beach had electrical crews are on standby in case of power outages.

Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue will have extra lifeguards on duty over the holiday weekend. “This being a holiday weekend, I’d expect an even larger crowd.”Emahiser said since reopening, most people are following the social distancing guidelines. This weekend, he said there could be strong rip currents and he is urging people to swim near a lifeguard. “Be safe, don’t swim alone and if you don’t know how to swim or you’re not an expert swimmer, consider staying out of the water,” said Emahiser.
