St. Johns County beach renourishment project in Vilano Beach completed ahead of schedule
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed the renourishment project at Vilano Beach in St. Johns County, Florida, three months ahead of schedule. The project, which involved adding sand to the shoreline, was finished in December. The next project for the Army Corps will take place at St. Augustine Beach, where 2.5 million cubic yards of sand will be added from Anastasia Island to A Street. This upcoming project is set to begin in February.

Showers fade Sunday night
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ A round of showers and storms that moved across our area prompted a Weather Authority Alert Day on Sunday. People in that area saw hours of rain, with amounts up to an inch. Clay, Putnam and St. Johns counties were under a tornado warning for parts of Sunday afternoon as showers and stormes pushed through. There were some reports of downed trees near State Road 13A and some flooding on County Road 65. AdThe Weather Authority Alert Day ended shortly before 6 p.m., and showers will fade Sunday night.
Driving on Vilano Beach returns after monthslong renourishment project
St. Johns County officials said driving on Vilano Beach was reinstated Sunday. VILANO BEACH, Fla. โ Vehicles are again permitted on Vilano Beach after a monthslong beach renourishment project to restore the dunes. According to county officials, the renourishment project was designed to restore critically-eroded shoreline and dunes. New right whale spotted off Georgia coast
โNausetโโ & her new calf were sighted off Sapelo Island, Georgia, yesterday. VILANO BEACH, Fla. โ We have another right whale baby sighting! Weeks after the first two calves of the season were sighted off the coasts of Florida and Georgia, another baby was spotted Monday, according to NOAA. She and the little one were spotted off Sapelo Island, Georgia. We have a new right whale!

VILANO BEACH, Fla. โ Some exciting news for right whale watchers! One calf was spotted near Cumberland Island with its mother on Friday while researchers surveyed them by plane. Researchers nicknamed her mother โMillipede.โ She is 16 years old and this is her second known calf. The first live right whale calf of the season was spotted by biologists with @CMAquarium off Cumberland Island, GA December 4. Mom is known right whale โChiminea.'
Engineers eye December for completion of Vilano Beach restoration
VILANO BEACH, Fla. โ If youโve been to Vilano Beach recently, chances are youโve noticed some construction going on. The restoration project for a 2.6 mile stretch of beach in St. Johns County was approved in July. About 1.3 million cubic yards of sand is being used in the restoration project. Enough to fill Spaceship Earth (a.k.a the big Epcot ball) 14 times with sand! Once the project is complete, grass will be added to the dunes during the spring growing season to solidify them.
Pro watercross national title to be decided in Vilano Beach this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Professional watercross will crown its national champion in Vilano Beach this weekend. The LiquiMoly ProWatercross National Tour will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Vilano stop became the season-ending and championship event when the original calendar date next weekend in Palm Beach was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. While we are disappointed we dont get to race next weekend, we are excited that we are able to have name the LiquiMoly ProWatercross national champions this weekend, said AJ Handler, CEO of the LiquiMoly Prowatercross Tour. We are excited that our event has been designated the national championship and look forward to a great weekend of racing.

St. Johns County Emergency Operations Center monitoring Dorian
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - As Dorian is forecast to become a major hurricane as it approaches Florida's East Coast, the St. Johns County Emergency Operations Center is at Level 3, which means it's actively monitoring the storm. St. Johns County Emergency Management has asked staffers with Emergency Operations Center-related responsibilities to closely monitor the progress of Dorian. St. Johns County will also make available supplemental sandbag services, but supplies may be limited and are not guaranteed. The Emergency Operations Center will be providing Hurricane Dorian updates through the weekend at www.sjcemergencymanagement.org and www.facebook.com/stjohnseoc. St. Johns County scraps 'love locks' from bridge walk without warning
A St. Augustine landmark disappeared overnight, leaving locals heartbroken, and scratching their heads. St. Johns County removed the padlocks from the bridge walk, effectively ending the tradition of attaching "love locks" to the bridge. One woman living in Saint Augustine says she is devastated. We are still waiting to find out where the locks went, and if loved ones can receive them. So my boyfriend takes me to St. Augustine to the Lock heart bridge.
